Things are a bit slow going as of lately. My work schedule changed, and I got recently hospitilized for having a seizure. Talk about a surprise.. wake up and the medics are standing over you.. Now I have to convince my neighbors that it wasn't drug related.

Its all about the modifacations and decisions you choose to make.
To answer your question, now that I have a good routine happening when I do these projects, I create a project in stages.
Stage 1 is set up/extraction of the subject.
Stage 2 is manipulating the subject the I want.
Stage 3 is creating a background
Stage 4 is the actual tattoo work on my subject
Stage 5 is where I finish the background
Stage 6 is image editing, clean up, resize.
Then I post it.
Basically before I start tattooing, I make sure I have the shadows and brightness/contrasts correct and I set a color for the background.

I think I was a tattoo artist in another life.
Yeah, I'm doing better now. It wasn't epilepsy, but they think it's a sleep disorder. My neighbors think I'm a cop, but I'm not but I carry a gun and work for the state government counter terrorism unit. So, they see me getting wheeled out and you can hear the whispers of "he's on drugs.. the cops are on drugs.."
That's life.
